FloodAlert

FloodAlert is the ideal, realtime, early flood warning system for single or multiple properties at risk from flooding and not covered by the Environment Agency flood warning service

FloodAlert posts can be strategically located to give maximum warning to properties at risk, allowing for evasive action to be taken.

Easy to install and set up, the sensor-equipped posts transmit warnings and real-time monitoring of groundwater, surface water and watercourse levels to a cloud-based portal, accessible from any smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop cmputer connected to the internet, with no necessity for special software.

FloodAlert uses a robust, ultrasonic LoRaWAN level sensor and integrated radio, encased in a recycled, watertight and shatter-resistant outer casing, ensuring consistent reliability. Posts can be installed up to 10 kilometres (15 kilometres in some cases) from a gateway and each gateway can connect to an unlimited number of users.

Benefits at a glance

  • FloodAlert posts are equipped with water level sensors and are easy to install and set up
  • Sustainable, cost-effective, real-time local flood alert system for properties at risk of flooding through rising groundwater, surface water and watercourses
  • Robust and reliable
  • Three alert levels, tailored to each installation
  • Sends out SMS and email flood alert notifications to allow for timely action to protect properties
  • Live monitoring on a cloud-based portal, accessible via any device connected to the internet
  • Tracks rising water levels for up to 10 kilometres+ from a gateway
  • Communicates with an unlimited number of users
  • Communication via a low-power LoRaWAN® network
  • Multiple posts can connect to form a network for flood risk hotspots

FloodAlert Sensor

FloodAlert Ultrasonic LoRaWAN Sensor is a battery operated water level sensor with integrated LoRaWAN radio. CE Conformance and RoHS Compliant. 24/7 monitoring with up to 10 kilometres range (15 kilometres in some cases).

The sensor is integrated inside the top part of the post and monitors groundwater, surface water and watercourse levels below and inside the post. The top of the post can be removed to give access for maintenance, for example battery replacement, however batteries will last for 12 years and routine maintenance is generally not required.

Easy installation and set-up

FloodAlert posts are buried in the ground in 0.5m post holes and back-filled with gravel to allow groundwater to enter the post through rows of holes. The sensor monitors water levels below and inside the post.

In many cases a single FloodAlert post will suffice, however a number of posts can also be deployed to protect a larger risk area and multiple properties.

The standard FloodAlert post is constructed from robust, 100% recycled post-industrial plastic waste with 30mm thick walls. Rows of holes allow groundwater to enter the post for the sensor to monitor the water levels. Other types of post are available and are dependant on intstallation requirements and conditions. Posts are available in grey, brown and black and are supplied with reflective strips, post are robust and easy to install.

Removable cap for maintenance such as replacing sensor batteries, no routine maintenance is required.

The sensor monitors water levels above and below ground 24/7, continually monitoring any rise or fall, sending SMS and email alerts to designated users and data to the cloud-based portal.

Three specified/tailored alert levels are set, based on a groundwater survey, above which the system sends the alerts and data about water levels.

The bottom third of the post is buried 0.5m below ground level in gravel filled post holes, allowing groundwater to enter the post.

Alarm levels

Depending on ground conditions and following a groundwater survey, three alarm levels will be programmed into the system.

Each time an alarm level threshold is breached, the user or users will receive email and SMS warnings on their registered devices.

Gateway

Users will be supplied with LoRaWAN gateway hardware and software as part of the network package, data from FloodAlert is transferred via the network to the cloud-based monitoring software. Users will receive alarm notifications. Indoor and outdoor gateway options are available, specifications vary depending on installation.

Web portal

The web portal is available on any device with a web browser and internet connection and provides realtime live data showing current water levels, historic data (up to the last 30 days of water levels) and information about signal strength, temperature and sensor battery life, all displayed in a graphic format.

Information from multiple data sources can be visualised in an easy-to-use dashboard with a traffic-light GREEN, AMBER and RED warning system.

FloodAlert collects realtime water level data for groundwater, surface water and watercourses and can merge the information with other flood risk variables such as 36-hour rainfall forecast data, rain gauge data, soil moisture/ground saturation data and Environment Agency river level data. A FloodAlert network can create a detailed dataset to help develop future flood risk models and flood alerts for local authorities and flood action groups.
